slavery or service?

The budget cuts affect everyone and when our school couldn't afford a second janitor they decided to pull together a "service" club for 3rd- 5th grade students. What does the service club do? In a nutshell, two to three kids come around each day to empty the trash in classrooms (I get creeped out with them eyeballing my lunch leftovers and always dump it into their big garbage bag for them) and every once in a while our OCD one and only janitor will allow them to clean a window or two at the front doors.
What do you think? Is this a good way to learn service or is it child labor at its best?

if it looks like a duck, and acts like a duck, then it is child labor. but hey, it is a recession and we all have to pitch in.

Boy that presents all sorts of issues. First reaction is I don't like it, but with some more thought Appletree & Jenny are both right in many ways. Kids today don't really know what work means and after all it is a recession & many of us are making drastic changes. I too can see some kids taking great pride in such a task. As long as they aren't taken advantage off, why not I vote.

I think it's ok. You know kids love to have that one special task to do in a day. What the hell.

It sucks that there are even budget cuts. Like schools are just rollin in the dough.

Just heard on the news today that our public schools are considering having PE teachers also teach music classes. How's that for budget-cut madness! As a former PE teacher I am pissed!!
